‘I’m not a big believer in this’: Florida teen shoots himself in front of friend

An 18-year-old Florida man shot himself in the head in front the other two people in a plastic barrel boat that was being used for a family vacation, officials said.

The teen, who is not identified by police, was in the back of the boat and was sitting on the back when he took a shot, said Sgt. Mark Miller with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooter was taken to the hospital, but is expected to survive, Miller said.

Deputies responded to the home at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday after a neighbor called 911 about a “loud noise” coming from inside the home, Miller told the Orlando Sentinel.

Authorities say the man had the barrel boat in the driveway, and the other person had a backpack.

Deputy Jeff Stokes said the barrel was unloaded, and it had the name “Barrel Adventure” on it.

Deputies believe the boy had a .40 caliber pistol in the backpack.

The boy was not in custody when deputies arrived.

The boy’s family has a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.
